The bustling Charleston docks were just around the corner on Bay Street when an English ship's captain, John Jones, built himself this home at 26 State Street.
That was in 1840. Because the area still looks like the antebellum times, the house has been used as a location in the filming of the television miniseries "North and South" and the feature length movie, "Cold Mountain". The residence balances a 19th century elegance with up-to-date touches. All of the floors are original heart pine. Brickwork is exposed in the living room along with the home's original fireplace.
Behind the house is a brick- walled garden, noted for a 135 year old Japanese maple tree and native and exotic foliage including Chinese palms, loquat, dogwood and palmettos.
